Blacksburg, Virginia – Snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph will sweep across the mountain counties of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia through Monday night, creating slick roads and the risk of falling tree limbs before the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday for Bland, Giles and Bath counties in Virginia and Monroe and eastern Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. Rain will change to snow across the higher elevations Sunday as colder air moves in. Total snow accumulations up to 3 inches are expected, with gusty winds continuing through Monday night.

Communities including Pearisburg, Bland, Hot Springs, Lewisburg, Union and White Sulphur Springs could see snow-covered roads, especially along Interstate 77, U.S. 460 and Interstate 64 through the Allegheny Highlands. Blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility on ridge tops, while strong gusts could snap small branches and cause isolated power outages.

Drivers should slow down and check 511 for the latest road conditions. Secure loose outdoor items and use caution near wooded areas.

Snow showers gradually diminish late Monday night, but slick spots may linger into early Tuesday. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase.
