Winchester, Va. – Roads across northwest Virginia and eastern West Virginia could turn slick by late morning Monday as snow pushes in at 10 a.m., followed by up to 0.2 inches of ice overnight that may freeze bridges and untreated secondary roads before the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of western and northern Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and western Maryland through at least 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, depending on location. Snow totals will range from 1 to 3 inches, with ridge tops in the Blue Ridge and Alleghenies seeing the highest amounts. Ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch could weigh on tree limbs and power lines.

In the Shenandoah Valley, including Frederick, Clarke, Page and Warren counties, snow develops late Monday morning before mixing with sleet and freezing rain Monday night. Along Interstate 81 and U.S. 50, slick stretches are likely after sunset. Farther north in Garrett County, Maryland, and Mineral County, West Virginia, steady snow will transition to freezing rain by late evening.

Central Virginia, including Albemarle, Augusta and Rockingham counties, will see lighter snow totals, but even a light glaze could create hazardous travel on U.S. 29 and Interstate 64 overnight.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for state road conditions. Temperatures climb above freezing Tuesday morning, changing precipitation to plain rain, but advisories remain in effect into early afternoon in parts of Maryland and West Virginia. Additional updates are possible if ice totals increase overnight.
