Blacksburg, Virginia – Drivers across southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia could hit slick, ice-coated roads by 7 a.m. Monday as freezing rain and light snow move in before the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday for Giles, Craig, Alleghany, and Bath counties in Virginia, along with Monroe and Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow and sleet, along with around 0.10 inch of ice accumulation.

Even a tenth of an inch of ice can glaze bridges and overpasses, especially along I-64 near Covington, U.S. 460 in Pearisburg, and Route 219 through Lewisburg and Union. Road crews with VDOT and the West Virginia Division of Highways are preparing treatment operations, but changing precipitation types could create patchy slick spots through both the morning and evening commutes Monday.

Residents in Clifton Forge, Hot Springs, White Sulphur Springs, and Rainelle should allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips during peak icing. Charge devices and monitor local alerts in case conditions worsen overnight.

Advisories remain in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, and additional updates could follow if ice totals trend higher.
