Annandale, VA – Freezing rain is creating hazardous travel conditions along the I-95 corridor and surrounding areas on Christmas Eve morning. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, as icy roads could impact travel plans leading up to Christmas.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Tuesday for much of Northern Virginia, including Stafford County, Fairfax, and Annandale. The advisory warns of freezing rain and icy conditions, particularly on untreated roadways and bridges. Even minor ice accumulation may result in slippery surfaces.
Highs on Christmas Eve are expected to climb to 44 degrees, gradually improving road conditions by the afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing. Tuesday night will remain cold, with lows around 30 degrees, leading to potential refreezing of wet surfaces.
Looking ahead, Christmas Day is forecast to be sunny with a high near 42 degrees, offering relief for holiday gatherings and travel. Temperatures will steadily climb later in the week, with highs reaching 46 degrees on Thursday and Friday under mostly sunny skies.
The weekend, however, brings a renewed chance of rain. Saturday and Sunday may see significant precipitation, with highs in the mid-40s to mid-50s. Residents should prepare for potentially wet conditions heading into next week.
Drivers are advised to delay travel until late morning Tuesday, when conditions are expected to improve. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service for the latest alerts.
