Richmond, VA – A tornado watch is in effect for central and southern Virginia, including Richmond, Danville, and Petersburg, until 1 a.m. EDT Monday. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center issued the alert Sunday evening, warning of the potential for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.
According to the NWS, the affected areas include 25 counties and seven independent cities, including Chesterfield, Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie counties. Cities under the watch include Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Hopewell.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant as conditions may rapidly intensify. Strong wind gusts, hail, and heavy rainfall are possible, increasing the risk of power outages and localized flooding. The NWS advises residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, such as NOAA weather radios and mobile alerts.
If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter in a sturdy building away from windows, preferably in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Avoid mobile homes and vehicles, as they provide little protection against tornadoes.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. Monday. Updates will be provided as the situation develops. Residents should monitor local weather sources for the latest information
