Richmond, Va. – Much of the Mid-Atlantic is finally seeing relief from weeks of dry conditions as steady rainfall moves across drought-affected regions from Virginia to Pennsylvania through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, widespread areas across the region are experiencing conditions ranging from D0 Abnormally Dry to D2 Severe Drought. The U.S. Drought Monitor map released Thursday highlights central Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and much of southern Pennsylvania as some of the hardest-hit zones. Rain is expected to continue into the weekend, offering much-needed moisture.

While no river flooding is currently forecast, minor rises between one and two feet are anticipated on some waterways. Forecasters are closely monitoring the flood potential, especially in areas with heavier downpours or localized runoff. Residents near rivers and creeks in places like Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Hagerstown, and York should remain alert for rising water levels.

Drivers should watch for slick roads during commutes, and farmers may need to adjust schedules for fieldwork. Though the rain is welcome, experts urge caution as soils in drought-stricken areas can initially resist absorption, increasing runoff risk.

Additional rainfall is expected into Sunday night, with updates likely if flood risks increase.
