Roanoke, Virginia – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday for parts of southwest Virginia, where damaging winds and hail could impact overnight travel and early morning plans.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes the counties of Bland, Buchanan, Dickenson, Giles, and Tazewell. Storms may bring wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-sized hail through the early morning hours.

Residents in these areas should stay weather-aware overnight, especially in higher elevation zones where winds can intensify. Local emergency managers advise securing outdoor objects and avoiding unnecessary travel during lightning activity. Power outages may be possible in rural areas due to tree damage on power lines.

Communities along U.S. Route 460 and portions of I-77 near Bluefield and Pearisburg should use caution if traveling late tonight. Schools and businesses opening early Saturday should monitor for updates in case of delays or local damage.

The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued if storms strengthen or shift eastward.
