Arlington, Va. – Severe thunderstorms could slam into Northern Virginia by late afternoon Friday, with damaging wind gusts and hail posing a threat to drivers and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. EDT for Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and surrounding counties, including the independent cities of Alexandria, Manassas, and Winchester.

Winds may reach up to 70 mph, and hail up to 1 inch in diameter is possible as multiple strong storm cells track eastward from the Blue Ridge into the D.C. suburbs. The storms could down trees and power lines, especially in areas like Culpeper, Shenandoah, and Stafford counties.

Travel on I-66, Route 50, and the Beltway could be hazardous during evening commutes. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor local alerts. Schools and events may face delays or cancellations depending on storm intensity.

This is the first widespread severe weather event in the region since April. Additional watches or warnings may be issued later this evening as the system moves eastward.
