Richmond, Va. – Strong storms and extreme heat are creating a dangerous weather setup across much of Virginia Sunday, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and heat index values surpassing 110°F expected between 3 and 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, scattered thunderstorms are likely late this afternoon and evening, especially along and east of I-95. A few storms could become severe, bringing damaging winds, small hail, and isolated flash flooding. The highest storm activity is expected to track from northwest to southeast at 20 mph.
Cities including Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach fall under a Marginal Risk for severe weather, but conditions remain favorable for brief, intense wind events. Localized power outages and downed tree limbs are possible. Meanwhile, a large portion of southeastern Virginia—including Franklin, Suffolk, and Emporia—is under an Extreme Heat Warning, with “feels-like” temperatures of 110°F or higher. Nearby areas such as Petersburg and South Hill are under a Heat Advisory, with heat indices of 105–109°F.
Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, wear lightweight clothing, and stay hydrated. Cooling centers and shaded spaces are recommended for those without air conditioning. Secure loose outdoor items in case of gusty winds.
Both the heat warnings and storm threat remain in effect through this evening. Additional advisories could be issued as conditions evolve.
