Richmond, VA – Six people died on Virginia roadways over the 2025 Thanksgiving holiday, according to preliminary data released Monday by Virginia State Police. The statewide total is two fewer deaths than recorded during the same period in 2024, though officials say the continued fatalities highlight persistent road safety challenges during the busy travel season.

According to Virginia State Police, the six fatal crashes occurred in Accomack, Augusta, Carroll, Dinwiddie, and Pittsylvania counties, as well as the City of Richmond. The Richmond crash on Saturday, Nov. 29, involved a pedestrian. Troopers noted that wintry weather may have contributed to a Nov. 30 crash in Carroll County along Interstate 77.

As of Dec. 1, 2025, state data shows 671 roadway deaths across Virginia this year, down from 788 by the same date in 2024. โ€œWe are pleased that fatalities are down for the Thanksgiving holiday, as well as the calendar year,โ€ said Col. Matthew D. Hanley, Superintendent of Virginia State Police. โ€œBut one fatality is one too many, and while our troopers push to make the roads as safe as possible, we also need Virginians to buckle up, drive sober, avoid distractions, and stay within the speed limit.โ€

To reduce deaths and injuries, troopers increased visibility and traffic enforcement as part of Operation C.A.R.E., a national Thanksgiving travel initiative. The 2025 enforcement effort led to 481 seatbelt citations, 126 child restraint violations, and 63 arrests for driving under the influence, police said. Troopers also cited 4,237 drivers for speeding and more than 1,700 for reckless driving.

Overall, troopers responded to 1,147 crashes statewide during the holiday period, with 123 resulting in injuries.
