Abingdon, VA – Light snow continues across the higher elevations of Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee this afternoon, creating slick road conditions that may impact travelers headed through mountain passes and ridge-top communities.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Morristown, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Wise, Russell, and Washington Counties in Virginia, and for the mountains of Johnson, Unicoi, Greene, Carter, Blount, Sevier, and Cocke Counties in Tennessee.
In the Virginia mountains—including Wise, Norton, Big Stone Gap, Lebanon, Castlewood, and Abingdon—snow totals may reach up to 2 inches, with the steadiest accumulation on ridges and higher terrain. Light snow and falling temperatures may produce slick conditions during the Monday evening commute, especially along U.S. 58, U.S. 19, and rural mountain routes.
Across East Tennessee’s highest elevations—stretching from Mountain City and Shady Valley south toward Erwin, Unicoi, and the Smokies—snow totals near 1 inch are expected. Even these modest amounts can quickly create icy patches on shaded roadways, winding mountain drives, and park roads near Cherokee and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
NWS forecasters note that snowfall should taper off by this evening, but residual slick spots may linger after dark, particularly on untreated surfaces and in sheltered hollows where temperatures will drop quickly.
Drivers should slow down, use extra caution, and check updated travel information through 511 in both states. Officials recommend that motorists allow extra time if traveling across ridge tops or through the Smokies this evening.
