Blacksburg, Va. – Thunderstorms are expected to move into the New River Valley beginning Tuesday afternoon, raising concerns for drivers and outdoor events through midweek. Rainfall could briefly be heavy at times, especially Wednesday, with localized downpours possible across Montgomery and Giles counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers and storms may develop after 2 p.m. Tuesday and again Wednesday afternoon into the evening. Rain chances peak at 40% Wednesday, with the heaviest storms potentially producing small hail or gusty winds. Storm activity should taper off by late Wednesday night, though unsettled conditions may linger into Thursday morning.

The stretch of I-81 near Christiansburg and Route 460 through Blacksburg could see slowed traffic during afternoon commutes if storms develop. Patchy fog is also likely Tuesday morning, reducing visibility in low-lying valleys until around 8 a.m.

Residents are urged to monitor changing conditions, avoid driving through standing water, and move outdoor plans indoors when thunder is heard. Those in rural areas may want to secure loose items ahead of gusty winds.

Rain chances ease by Friday, with temperatures staying seasonable in the low to mid-80s through the week. Additional advisories may be issued if stronger storms develop.
