Pittsylvania County, VA – A Virginia State Trooper was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after a vehicle struck two state police cruisers on U.S. Highway 29 while troopers assisted a disabled tractor-trailer, authorities said.

According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 2:04 p.m. on the southbound side of U.S. 29 in Pittsylvania County. Two troopers were outside their patrol vehicles when a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser traveling southbound hit the rear patrol car. That vehicle then struck one of the troopers before colliding with a second patrol car.

The injured trooper was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The second trooper was not injured. Police said both cruisers had their emergency lights activated and were partially in the right travel lane to protect the disabled tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Chrysler, identified as Raul Jesus Salas, 74, of Gretna, was charged with reckless driving.

The Virginia State Police said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
