Roanoke, Virginia – Storms sweeping into southwest Virginia this weekend could knock down trees and disrupt travel along U.S. 460 and Interstate 81.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, scattered thunderstorms Saturday afternoon may bring wind gusts up to 40 mph. Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Salem, and Floyd are all in the path of these fast-moving cells. The main threat is isolated wind damage from gusts, which may topple limbs and unsecured outdoor items.

By midday Saturday, the risk for strong thunderstorms will grow as moisture and daytime heating fuel unstable spring conditions. Rain may reduce visibility quickly, especially on major roadways like I-81, U.S. 460, and U.S. 11. Drivers should slow down, avoid standing water, and be alert for downed branches.

Rain and storm chances will remain elevated into Sunday. While hail is not expected, locally heavy rain could lead to brief flooding in low-lying areas and along poorly drained roads. No severe thunderstorm watch has been issued yet, but conditions may warrant rapid updates.
