Richmond, Va. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are sweeping across Virginia Thursday evening, threatening high winds and large hail in more than 60 counties and cities, including Richmond, Roanoke, and Charlottesville, under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 12 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes central, western, and southern parts of the state, where storms may produce gusts up to 60 mph, isolated hail, and frequent lightning. Areas affected range from Albemarle and Augusta counties to Chesterfield, Henrico, and Prince George.

Cities like Danville, Lynchburg, and Staunton could see quick-moving cells capable of knocking out power or downing trees during the evening commute and early overnight hours. Drivers are urged to stay off roads during intense rainfall, and residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for possible outages.

The widespread watch covers both rural counties and major population centers, underscoring the broad threat. Similar systems have caused localized flooding and damage across the region in past Mays.

The watch remains in effect until midnight, and additional warnings may be issued as storms intensify. Stay tuned to local weather alerts and prepare for changing conditions through the night.
