Richmond, Va. – Dangerous thunderstorms are set to impact much of Virginia Wednesday afternoon and evening, threatening widespread power outages, hazardous travel, and outdoor disruptions across more than 50 counties until 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for major metro areas including Arlington, Charlottesville, Roanoke, and Alexandria, as well as dozens of surrounding counties and independent cities. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning are likely through tonight, especially along the I-81 and I-95 corridors.

Residents in Fairfax, Loudoun, Henrico, Albemarle, and Prince William counties should expect rapidly changing weather, with sudden downpours reducing visibility and scattered trees or power lines falling onto roadways. Evening commuters should delay travel if possible, and parents are urged to confirm after-school activity plans as cancellations are possible.

Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power are preparing for potential outages. Emergency managers urge everyone to secure outdoor objects, charge mobile devices, and stay indoors during severe weather. Similar storm outbreaks in July 2023 knocked out power to thousands across the region.

This Severe Thunderstorm Watch is set to expire by 10 p.m., but further advisories could follow if storms persist overnight.
