Blacksburg, Va. – Severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening across central and southwest Virginia, with the greatest risk for damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado focused along and east of the Blue Ridge.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, storms may begin to intensify by mid-afternoon and continue into the evening hours. The entire region remains under an Elevated severe weather risk, with the highest danger expected in areas east of the Blue Ridge. Localized flooding is also possible where heavy rain falls repeatedly over the same locations.

Cities like Lynchburg, Danville, and Roanoke should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Urban areas with poor drainage could see flash flooding, especially during the evening commute. Winds may bring down trees or power lines, and any rotating storm cell could briefly produce a tornado.

If you’re outdoors today — especially near the Blue Ridge Parkway or in open areas — have a way to receive emergency alerts. Secure loose items and stay ready to take shelter in a sturdy building if warnings are issued.

Storm chances ease later tonight, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local news for updates.
