Virginia — A sharp northwest wind cuts across the coast this morning, rattling dunes and pushing icy air inland as waves pound the shoreline.
A Weather Alert remains in effect across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, combining bitter cold with dangerous marine conditions. Temperatures near Virginia Beach hover in the mid-20s early today, but gusty winds drive wind chills into the teens. The cold creates a heightened risk of black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Cold Weather Advisory continues through mid-morning. Wind chills near zero are possible in colder pockets inland. Drivers are urged to slow down, particularly during early travel when untreated surfaces may still be slick.
Along the coast, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect through the pre-dawn hours. Breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet continue to impact the Eastern Shore and Outer Banks. Beach erosion and overwash are possible in vulnerable areas, and ocean conditions remain dangerous for anyone entering the water.
Conditions improve gradually today. Sunshine returns, and highs climb into the mid-30s. Even so, melting will be limited. Any moisture left behind from overnight spray or earlier freezing may refreeze after sunset, renewing icy spots tonight.
Tuesday marks a noticeable shift. Clouds increase, and highs reach the low 40s as winds ease. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, a frontal system brings a chance of rain, which could briefly mix with snow as colder air filters back in Wednesday afternoon. Impacts look minor for now, but timing could affect travel.
Heading toward the Feb 6–8 weekend, colder and breezy conditions return. Winter remains active along the coast.
