Virginia — Warm, humid air is surging into the Blue Ridge this morning, and the atmosphere across southwest Virginia is rapidly becoming unstable. Clouds are thickening over Blacksburg, and meteorologists warn storms could intensify quickly later today.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of southwest Virginia under a Slight Risk for severe weather, while nearby foothills and Piedmont areas face an Enhanced to Moderate Risk. The setup points to a volatile afternoon across the region.

Storms could begin developing between late morning and early afternoon, with the strongest activity expected from mid-afternoon into the evening.

Forecasters say the primary threat will be damaging winds exceeding 60 mph, capable of knocking down trees and power lines. Scattered power outages are possible if storms strengthen.

A few isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially across areas east of the Blue Ridge. These storms could spin up quickly along the advancing cold front.

Large hail may also accompany stronger storms. Some hailstones could reach around 1 inch in diameter in the most intense cells.

Heavy rain is another concern today. Localized flash flooding may develop, particularly west of the Blue Ridge where storms could train over the same locations.

Drivers along Interstate 81, Route 460, and Route 11 should be prepared for sudden downpours and strong wind gusts this afternoon. Visibility could drop quickly during heavier storms.
