Virginia – Warm, humid air hangs over the New River Valley this morning while fog drifts quietly across mountain roads near Blacksburg. The calm start will not last long.

Clouds will thicken through midday, and scattered thunderstorms may develop across southwest Virginia during the afternoon. Some storms could strengthen quickly as warmer air builds.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the region faces a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms later today, with damaging wind gusts as the primary concern. Temperatures will climb toward 76 degrees, creating enough instability for storms to organize.

Drivers along U.S. 460, Route 114, and Interstate 81 should stay alert later today. Heavy rain bursts may briefly reduce visibility, and gusty winds could push debris onto roadways.

Meteorologists say storms may continue into the evening before gradually weakening. Rainfall amounts generally remain light, but isolated heavier downpours are possible within stronger thunderstorms.

Sunday remains unsettled early with additional showers possible across Montgomery County and surrounding areas. Conditions gradually improve later in the day as clouds begin to break.

Then spring warmth returns quickly.

Sunshine builds Monday across Blacksburg with highs near 73 degrees, followed by near-80 degree warmth by Tuesday across much of southwest Virginia. The warming trend continues into midweek as temperatures remain well above average for early March.

Residents should also prepare for the Daylight Saving Time change early Sunday morning. Clocks move forward one hour at 2 a.m., bringing longer daylight evenings across Virginia.

Long-range outlooks suggest mild temperatures will dominate much of the eastern United States through midweek.
