Norfolk, Virginia – Drivers across Hampton Roads could face slick, icy roads overnight as freezing rain spreads across the region, creating hazardous travel conditions through early Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Monday for Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Poquoson. Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, enough to make bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads especially dangerous.
The icing threat extends south into northeastern North Carolina, where Bertie County is also under a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 a.m. Additional ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch are possible there, increasing the risk for downed tree limbs and isolated power outages. Temperatures hovering near freezing are allowing rain to freeze on contact, particularly during the overnight hours.
In southeast Virginia, travel could become difficult along major routes including I-64, I-264, and local secondary roads. City streets in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake may appear wet but quickly turn slick, catching drivers off guard. Emergency officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Residents are also advised to prepare for possible power disruptions and to check road conditions through state 511 services before heading out. Conditions are expected to gradually improve toward daybreak as temperatures rise, but slick spots may linger past sunrise. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Monday morning.
