VIRGINIA — The soft patter of early morning rain will soon give way to a sharp, dry chill sweeping across eastern and central Virginia. A deep breath outside before sunrise carries the hint of what’s coming — a true taste of winter. By late evening, temperatures will tumble fast, and much of the region from Richmond to Virginia Beach faces a Freeze Warning through early Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield warns of subfreezing temperatures dropping to the upper 20s inland, with even coastal areas dipping into the low 30s. The cold will be brief but biting — enough to damage sensitive vegetation, freeze outdoor plumbing, and end the growing season for much of eastern Virginia and parts of northeast North Carolina. Residents are urged to cover outdoor plants, disconnect hoses, and protect pets and pipes before the evening chill sets in.

Tuesday brings sunshine and a light breeze, with highs rebounding into the upper 40s — a crisp but pleasant turnaround for Veterans Day events. The remainder of the week looks calm and milder, with 50s midweek and near 60°F by Thursday — ideal for late-fall yard work or holiday prep ahead of Thanksgiving travel later this month.

But don’t let the warm-up fool you — this week’s cold snap marks the first major freeze of the season for coastal Virginia, and more early winter pattern shifts may follow later in November. Keep an eye on the skies — and your garden covers — as this rollercoaster November weather continues.
