Richmond, VA – Flash flooding is possible today across Virginia and parts of North Carolina, with the greatest risk expected during the morning hours. Officials warn that heavy rain from scattered thunderstorms may quickly push streams and creeks out of their banks, especially in urban and low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the highest flash flooding threat is across the Piedmont region and areas east of the Blue Ridge, including along Route 29. Forecasters caution that storms could be slow-moving or repeatedly track over the same locations, increasing the likelihood of dangerous flooding conditions.

Flash flood risk is expected to be highest this morning before gradually tapering off by evening. Residents are urged to remain alert to rapidly changing weather and to avoid driving through flooded roadways. The Virginia State Police echoed the warnings, reminding drivers to “turn around, don’t drown” if they encounter water covering a road.

Authorities recommend monitoring multiple sources for weather alerts, staying weather-aware while outdoors, and keeping updated through NOAA Weather Radio or official channels.
