Nags Head, N.C. – Coastal communities along the Outer Banks and eastern North Carolina are preparing for tropical storm conditions expected to arrive Wednesday evening, with forecasters warning of winds up to 50 mph and life-threatening storm surge through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch remain in effect for Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Manteo, Ocracoke, and Hatteras Island. Winds could strengthen to tropical storm force, downing trees, damaging porches and awnings, and creating hazardous travel on bridges.

Storm surge of 2 to 4 feet is possible in low-lying areas, with coastal flooding concerns beginning as early as Tuesday morning. Officials warn of beach erosion, dune breaches, and dangerous rip currents. Mariners from Pamlico Sound to Virginia waters face seas building to 15 feet, and the Coast Guard urges vessels to remain in port.

Rainfall totals are expected to stay low, but flooding from surge remains a major concern. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and be ready to evacuate if local orders are issued.

Advisories are likely to continue as the system nears, with the most dangerous conditions expected from Wednesday evening into Thursday afternoon.
