Blacksburg, VA – Residents across the Piedmont of North Carolina and Virginia are being urged to stay alert today as heavy rainfall from scattered thunderstorms raises the risk of flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, flash flooding is most likely this morning, especially in low-lying and urban areas east of the Blue Ridge and along Route 29. Forecasters warn that storms could be slow moving, causing repeated downpours over the same locations.

Streams and creeks in affected regions may rise rapidly, pushing water levels over their banks and creating dangerous flooding conditions. The weather service emphasized that while storms are expected to taper off by this evening, the heaviest rainfall and highest flash flooding risk will occur earlier in the day.

Officials are urging residents to prepare for rapidly changing weather and to avoid flooded roadways. The National Weather Service advises having multiple ways to receive alerts, staying weather-aware if outdoor plans are scheduled, and remembering the critical warning: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

This flood risk remains limited, but vulnerable communities, especially those east of the Blue Ridge, could see localized impacts. Commuters and residents are encouraged to use caution and monitor updates throughout the day.
