Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service is warning of a growing ice storm risk from early Tuesday through Wednesday morning (1 a.m. Tuesday – 7 a.m. Wednesday) across Virginia and North Carolina, as a developing winter storm tracks from the Gulf Coast into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, the greatest icing potential extends from central North Carolina through southern and western Virginia, including the southern Appalachians. Freezing rain and sleet could lead to hazardous road conditions, downed power lines, and localized outages, especially on untreated and elevated surfaces.

Forecasters say the system could also produce heavy snow farther north through the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast, while the Mid-Atlantic faces the most significant ice-related travel hazards.

Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for power disruptions, and monitor updated forecasts as the storm’s track and intensity remain uncertain.
