Blacksburg, Va. – A sharp chill grips the Blue Ridge early Thursday as dry air sweeps through the New River Valley, marking the coldest stretch of the season so far. Fields sparkle faintly under a waning moon, and the first hard freeze of fall looms just hours away.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Freeze Warning goes into effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday across southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina, including Pulaski, Galax, Radford, Wytheville, and Boone. Temperatures could drop as low as 25°F, cold enough to kill unprotected crops and garden vegetation. Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, drain outdoor sprinkler systems, and protect exposed pipes before nightfall.

Wind gusts up to 30 mph Thursday afternoon will combine with very low humidity, maintaining increased fire danger through early evening. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as dry leaves and brush could ignite quickly in these gusty, arid conditions.

By Friday morning, widespread frost and freeze conditions are expected under clear skies. The cold air eases slightly by afternoon with highs rebounding to the mid-50s. Saturday brings another sunny, calm day, perfect for late-fall cleanup or early Halloween decorating.

Looking ahead, temperatures stay mild through Sunday before moisture returns early next week, possibly bringing light showers Tuesday and Wednesday. Still, for the mountain counties, this freeze marks a seasonal turning point — the end of the growing season and the first true taste of winter’s approach.
