Lynchburg, VA – A Lynchburg man has been arrested in connection with a suspicious death at High Bridge Trail State Park, according to authorities.

Virginia State Police announced Friday that agents with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Appomattox Field Office, arrested Demetrius M. Brown, 28, of Lynchburg. He has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Samantha Okiyni, 23, of Prospect.

According to Virginia State Police, Brown was taken into custody without incident earlier today. He is currently awaiting processing in the City of Lynchburg.

The investigation began Saturday, Aug. 23, when two bicyclists discovered the remains of a deceased woman in the Prospect section of High Bridge Trail State Park. Authorities later identified the victim as Okiyni.

State Police said law enforcement rangers with the Department of Conservation & Recreation, the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies assisted in the investigation.

Brown is being held as the case remains under investigation. No further details about a possible motive or circumstances leading to Okiyni’s death were released.

High Bridge Trail State Park, which spans more than 30 miles through several Virginia counties, is a popular destination for hiking and biking.
