Blacksburg, Va. – Heavy rain from late-day thunderstorms could lead to localized flooding across southwest Virginia, west-central Virginia, southeast West Virginia, and northwest North Carolina through Thursday night. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg warns that slow-moving storms will carry the greatest risk into the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service, the strongest storms are expected between late afternoon and midnight, with downpours capable of dropping more than an inch of rain in isolated spots. Urban areas and low-lying valleys near Roanoke, Wytheville, and Princeton, W.Va., may see ponding on roads and reduced visibility during the evening commute.
By Friday, skies will clear for much of the region, though a few lingering showers remain possible early in the day. Weekend conditions stay unsettled, with another round of thunderstorms likely Saturday afternoon and again Sunday, particularly across the New River Valley and into the Alleghany Highlands.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and use caution if traveling tonight. While no organized severe weather outbreak is expected, isolated heavy rainfall remains the main concern. Additional advisories may be issued if flooding develops.
