Blacksburg, Va. – Dense fog is blanketing roads across parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia this morning, cutting visibility to under a quarter mile and making early commutes especially dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. EDT Friday for much of the Blue Ridge region, including Ashe, Watauga, and Alleghany counties in North Carolina, Smyth, Montgomery, Giles, and Wythe counties in Virginia, and Monroe and Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. Major roadways like I-81, I-77, and U.S. 221 are expected to be affected by the low visibility.

Drivers in cities like Blacksburg, Wytheville, Boone, and Lewisburg are urged to slow down, turn on low-beam headlights, and allow extra distance when braking. Emergency management officials warn that patchy fog may linger in valleys even after sunrise.

This advisory is part of a broader humid air mass settling into the region following overnight rainfall and calm winds—ideal conditions for dense fog formation.

More updates could follow if visibility fails to improve after 9 a.m.
