ANNANDALE, VA – Frost glints off windshields this morning as winter’s first true tease takes hold across the Mid-Atlantic. By late Friday, the calm, cold air will give way to developing snow showers spreading through northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland — a pattern signaling winter’s steady arrival.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service Baltimore–Washington Office note that a weak system from the Great Lakes will move into the region by Friday evening, bringing a 20–30% chance of light snow, then increasing to 70% Saturday night. While early totals should stay light — a coating to perhaps an inch in higher elevations — slick travel remains likely by Saturday night on I-95, I-270, and local secondary roads as temperatures hover near freezing.
Winds may gust over 30 mph Thursday and Friday, keeping the air brisk and dry before the moisture moves in. Saturday brings cloudy skies and highs in the low 40s, then falling temps as snow develops overnight. By Sunday, lingering flurries and wind chills in the teens could make for a bitter finish to the weekend.
5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):
- Friday: Partly sunny, high 38°F, slight chance of snow late.
- Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high 43°F, snow likely late.
- Sunday: Chance of snow, high 32°F, cold and breezy.
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 31°F.
