Richmond, Virginia – A sharp late-season cold surge will send temperatures 5 to 15 degrees below normal across the Mid-Atlantic by Friday night, raising the risk for frost, icy roads, and patchy wintry precipitation.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, a strong signal for below-normal temperatures will persist across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania through early next week. While overall precipitation remains near normal, colder air will allow for winter-like impacts during overnight and early morning hours.

In Virginia, including Richmond, Roanoke, and northern areas near I-81, overnight lows are expected to dip into the upper 20s to low 30s, creating widespread frost potential. Maryland, including Baltimore and areas along I-95, may see patchy freezing rain or icy spots on bridges during early morning hours.

Further north into Pennsylvania, including Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, a mix of rain and wet snow is possible overnight, with brief slick conditions on untreated roads. Higher elevations in western Maryland and northern Virginia could also see light snow showers.

Residents should protect sensitive plants, cover outdoor vegetation, and use caution during the morning commute where temperatures hover near freezing. This colder pattern will persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible if freezing conditions intensify.
