Virginia – Cold air sits heavy this morning, quiet and sharp, with frost clinging to shaded ground. Sunlight helps today, but winter tightens its grip again as snow chances and strong winds build heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures stay near freezing today across Northern Virginia, Maryland suburbs, and the District. Clouds increase late, setting up a chance for snow by Friday afternoon. Highs reach the mid-30s before colder air returns quickly after sunset.

Annandale, Alexandria, and Arlington could see light snow develop Friday afternoon, especially after mid-day. Accumulations look minor, but timing matters for commuters. Even a brief burst could coat roads just as temperatures hover near freezing. Friday night turns colder, with lows near 15 and northwest winds increasing.

Saturday delivers the bigger impact. Sunshine returns, but it comes with strong, gusty winds. Gusts may approach 35 to 40 mph at times, driving wind chills into the single digits. Highs struggle near the low 20s, making it feel bitter despite clear skies. Loose objects should be secured, and layered clothing is essential.

Saturday night stays blustery and very cold. Lows dip near 9 degrees, and wind chills fall lower. Any melted snow refreezes quickly, raising the risk of slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Sunday remains cold but calmer, with highs near the low 20s under partial sun.

Looking ahead, relief appears early next week. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows above-normal temperatures expanding east, hinting at a gradual warm-up across the Mid-Atlantic after this Arctic surge.

Plan extra time for travel Friday afternoon. Bundle up this weekend. How strong did the wind feel where you live?
