Norfolk, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has extended a Gale Warning for Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s coastal waters early Monday as strong north winds and rough seas continue to create hazardous marine conditions.

According to the weather service, north winds of 25 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 35 knots, are producing waves between 4 and 8 feet in the Chesapeake Bay and seas up to 15 feet offshore from Fenwick Island, Delaware, to the Virginia–North Carolina border. The warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. for the Bay and 7 a.m. for coastal waters.

Meteorologists caution that the combination of strong winds and high seas could capsize or damage small vessels and reduce visibility in open waters. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel area is experiencing some of the roughest conditions early Monday.

Mariners are urged to delay departures, seek safe harbor, and secure vessels until winds diminish later in the morning.
