Richmond, VA – Virginia State Police are investigating more than 150 mysterious reports of drone activity across the Commonwealth this December, raising concerns about potential risks near critical infrastructure and other sensitive areas. The reports, received by the Virginia Fusion Center (VFC), are being shared with key stakeholders to assess and address any threats.
Law enforcement encourages residents to report suspicious drone activity, particularly near energy facilities, military sites, or other critical infrastructure. Tips can be sent to the Virginia Fusion Center at vfc@vfc.vsp.virginia.gov. “We encourage anyone that witnesses a drone flying over critical infrastructure, such as energy installations, or military sites, to contact the Virginia Fusion Center,” said Virginia State Police Special Agent D. Robinson. “This will enable us to work with our partners to determine exactly what is occurring, and how to move forward.”
Virginia law prohibits drones from flying within 50 feet of a residence without federal authorization and requires operators to stay within visual line of sight and under 400 feet. Commercial operators must have an FAA license, while recreational users need a remote pilot certificate. Shooting at drones is against federal law, as airspace is federally regulated.
For additional information and safety guidelines, residents can access VFC Shield Program resources at www.fusion.vsp.virginia.gov/shield.
