Richmond, Va. – A brutal stretch of heat is underway across eastern Virginia today, with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s and heat index values topping 102° in some cities.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the heat wave began early Sunday and is expected to persist through at least Monday. Maximum heat index readings between 97° and 102° are forecast for much of the region, including Richmond, Petersburg, and Tappahannock. Richmond is projected to reach 97°F with a heat index of 101°, while Williamsburg and Norfolk could feel like 100°+ by mid-afternoon.
Cities across central and southeastern Virginia—like South Hill, Emporia, and Franklin—are also bracing for oppressive conditions. NWS officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Outdoor workers and vulnerable groups face an increased risk of heat-related illness.
