Richmond, Va. – Triple-digit heat index values are set to blanket much of Virginia starting Saturday, with some locations feeling as hot as 105°F through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a strong ridge of high pressure will send afternoon temperatures soaring into the low-to-mid 90s beginning Saturday, with the heat index — what it feels like with humidity — reaching 100°F to 105°F in cities like Richmond, Norfolk, Hampton, and Ahoskie through Tuesday. The spike follows a brief cool-down caused by a backdoor cold front and cloud cover Friday.

Hot spots include Norfolk and Portsmouth, where Monday’s heat index could hit 105°F, and Elizabeth City and Hampton, expected to feel like 104°F Sunday. Areas farther inland, like Farmville and South Hill, are also forecast to see 101°F heat indices. Overnight lows in the 70s will offer limited relief, raising heat stress concerns.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Use air conditioning where possible and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat (1–5 p.m.).

The heat dome is expected to hold through Tuesday evening, with temperatures dipping slightly into the upper 80s by midweek. More advisories may be issued if the heat intensifies.
