Roanoke, Va. – Scorching heat and afternoon thunderstorms are set to slam much of central and southwest Virginia today, with heat indices soaring to 107°F in some areas and storms threatening flash flooding by late evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday for the Roanoke Valley and points east, including Lynchburg, Danville, and South Boston. Afternoon heat index values will hover between 102°F and 107°F, with the highest values across the Piedmont.
Storms are expected to begin along the Blue Ridge early this afternoon, pushing into the Piedmont by evening. These scattered thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts and excessive rainfall, especially around Lynchburg, Martinsville, and parts of southern Virginia.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water, and avoid non-essential travel during peak heat. If storms strike, watch for ponding on roads and be alert for rapid water rise in flood-prone areas.
More heat and storm activity is possible Friday. Updates will follow as new advisories are issued.
