Richmond, VA – Scorching temperatures and stifling humidity will grip much of Virginia and parts of southeast Maryland Thursday, as a heat advisory warns of heat index values soaring to 107° from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the advisory covers major population centers including Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and stretches north to the Maryland beaches. Residents in cities such as Newport News, Petersburg, Chesapeake, and Accomack County should prepare for dangerous heat and a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses.

Schools, daycares, and outdoor job sites across Chesterfield, Henrico, York, and Surry counties are urged to take precautions. Local agencies recommend limiting outdoor activities to the early morning or evening, wearing light, loose-fitting clothes, and staying hydrated. Power companies anticipate increased demand as more residents rely on air conditioning to stay cool.

Hot weather like this can be especially hazardous for seniors, young children, and those without access to cooling. Check on neighbors, and never leave pets or children in parked vehicles. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, and nausea—seek shade and medical help if these occur.

The advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday. Additional alerts may follow if heat persists into Friday.
