Richmond, Va. – A sweltering heat wave is set to grip central and southeastern Virginia on Friday, with heat index values expected to reach a dangerous 107° from late morning through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday for Richmond, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and portions of northeast North Carolina, including Camden and Pasquotank counties. The advisory warns of high humidity and oppressive temperatures capable of causing heat-related illnesses.

In urban centers like Norfolk and Portsmouth, the combination of heat and stagnant air could intensify the discomfort during the afternoon commute. Outdoor workers and those without air conditioning are especially vulnerable. Health officials urge residents to stay indoors when possible, remain hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors or those without access to cooling.

Local cooling centers will be available in Henrico and Hampton, while York and James City counties are encouraging reduced outdoor activity for vulnerable groups. Similar heat events in recent years have led to surges in emergency calls for dehydration and heat exhaustion.

The intense heat is expected to ease slightly by Saturday, but additional advisories are possible if the high-pressure system lingers.
