Norfolk, Va. – Triple-digit heat and oppressive humidity will grip much of southeast Virginia and northeastern North Carolina today, pushing heat index values as high as 109° in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for cities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk, as well as North Carolina counties such as Bertie, Hertford, and Currituck. Heat index readings between 105° and 109° will make outdoor conditions dangerous, particularly for those without air conditioning or who work outside.

In Virginia, affected counties include Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Isle of Wight, and James City, while Eastern North Carolina counties under advisory include Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Chowan. Residents should limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.

Cooling centers are expected to open in some localities. Officials urge residents to stay inside during peak heat hours and avoid strenuous activity.

This is the region’s second significant heat event this month, with more potential advisories early next week if the pattern holds.

⚠️ Heat advisories remain in effect through 8 p.m. tonight. Stay tuned for updates from local emergency agencies.
