Lynchburg, VA – Scorching heat grips central Virginia and neighboring North Carolina counties today as a heat advisory warns of a 106-degree heat index until 8 p.m. Saturday. Residents in Lynchburg, Danville, South Boston, and surrounding areas face a significant risk for heat-related illnesses as temperatures and humidity spike.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the advisory covers Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, and Pittsylvania counties in Virginia, along with Caswell and Rockingham in North Carolina. The advisory runs from noon through 8 p.m., urging everyone to minimize outdoor activities during peak heat.
South Boston, Keysville, Eden, and Yanceyville are expected to feel the brunt of the heat. Health officials stress the importance of staying hydrated, remaining in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and checking on elderly relatives and neighbors. The risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke is especially high for those spending prolonged time outdoors or without adequate cooling.
Residents should limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Local cooling centers may be available for those without access to air conditioning.
The heat advisory is set to expire at 8 p.m., but high temperatures could persist into the evening. Stay tuned for additional advisories as weather conditions develop.
