Blacksburg, VA – Bitter cold is gripping Virginia, with a wind chill advisory remaining in effect through Wednesday morning for parts of the region. Wind chills as low as -10°F are expected today and may drop to -15°F overnight in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, this advisory spans portions of southwest and west-central Virginia. Scattered flurries are forecast for tonight, with clouds clearing by morning as temperatures plunge to 2°F. Residents are advised to bundle up, avoid prolonged exposure, and ensure pets and vulnerable individuals stay warm.
Wednesday brings some relief with sunny skies and a high near 24°F, but the cold will persist. Overnight lows are projected to hover around 16°F. Warmer conditions return Thursday, with highs climbing to 34°F, accompanied by mostly sunny skies. By Friday, temperatures could reach 32°F under partly cloudy conditions.
Travelers should exercise caution as icy patches remain possible on roads like Interstate 81 and Route 460. Officials warn against unnecessary travel during peak cold periods and advise wearing layers, hats, and gloves when venturing outdoors.
Looking ahead, the weekend offers a gradual warm-up. Saturday’s high could hit 39°F, with 43°F forecast for Sunday. Still, chilly nights in the teens are expected.
