Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Freeze Warning from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. EDT Saturday, covering much of central and south central Virginia as sub-freezing temperatures are expected to reach as low as 30 degrees.
Counties under the warning include Prince Edward, Cumberland, Goochland, Caroline, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Amelia, Powhatan, Dinwiddie, western Hanover, and western Chesterfield.
According to the NWS, frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may be at risk. Residents are encouraged to cover plants, bring in potted vegetation, and insulate outdoor pipes ahead of the coldest hours.
The Weather Service noted that Louisa and Fluvanna counties are excluded from the warning after already experiencing freezing temperatures earlier Friday morning, signaling the end of their growing season.
Forecasters expect temperatures to warm slightly later in the weekend, but Saturday morning’s freeze will likely mark the first widespread frost event of the season for many parts of the region.
