Blacksburg, VA – Storms rolling through Virginia Tuesday afternoon could drench parts of Montgomery County, including Blacksburg, with heavy rain and damaging winds by nightfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers and thunderstorms are likely Tuesday between 3 p.m. and midnight, some bringing rainfall totals over three-quarters of an inch in localized downpours. Gusts from stronger cells may exceed 30 mph. Motorists on U.S. 460 and surrounding rural roads should expect brief low visibility and possible ponding.

Showers will taper overnight, giving way to a much calmer pattern by midweek. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be dry and sunny, with highs reaching 84°F to 86°F and lows in the mid-60s. Patchy fog could form overnight but should clear quickly each morning.

The summer weather turns ideal just in time for the holiday. Independence Day, Friday, July 4, will be mostly sunny with a high near 87°F. Saturday and Sunday continue the warm, dry trend, perfect for outdoor celebrations or travel across southwest Virginia.

Residents should monitor updates through Tuesday evening and delay unnecessary driving during storms. With the ground already saturated from recent rainfall, flash flooding could occur in poor drainage areas.

Warnings remain possible into Tuesday night. Next update expected early Tuesday afternoon.
