Richmond, VA – Virginia residents can expect cooler conditions today along with a high risk of rip currents along the coast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield.
NWS forecasters said Sunday will bring highs in the mid-70s for northeastern Virginia and upper 70s to low 80s across the southwest. A few lingering morning showers are possible in northern counties, but skies are expected to gradually clear by late morning. Conditions will remain mostly cloudy with occasional sun peeking through.
According to the weather service, unsettled weather is forecast to return by mid to late week, bringing daily chances of showers and thunderstorms. For now, beachgoers are urged to use caution, as rip currents remain a major hazard. A high risk of rip currents is in effect for all Virginia beaches through Tuesday, fueled by increasing swells from Tropical Storm Gabrielle.
Officials advise swimmers and surfers to avoid entering the ocean during the advisory. Strong rip currents can quickly pull even experienced swimmers out to deeper waters, creating life-threatening situations.
Residents and travelers along the Virginia coastline, including areas near Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the Outer Banks region, should remain alert to changing conditions. Updates will be provided as Tropical Storm Gabrielle continues to influence the Mid-Atlantic coast.
