Lynchburg, VA – Flash flooding could threaten roads, homes, and low-lying areas across central and south central Virginia late Monday, as a Flood Watch takes effect from this afternoon through midnight. Residents from Danville to Lynchburg should brace for several hours of torrential rain that could quickly overwhelm rivers and streams.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the Flood Watch covers Rockbridge, Bedford, Amherst, Pittsylvania, Campbell, Appomattox, Buckingham, Halifax, and Charlotte counties. Rainfall rates may intensify between 2 p.m. and midnight, raising the risk of flash flooding on smaller roads and flood-prone neighborhoods.
Cities such as South Boston, Buena Vista, Lexington, and Keysville could see rapid water rises along creeks, making travel dangerous—especially on routes like US-29 and US-460. Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and remind everyone: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Residents in flood-prone spots should charge phones, secure valuables, and prepare to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.
This evening’s threat marks one of the summer’s most widespread flood watches for the region, reminiscent of early July 2023 storms. Additional watches or warnings may follow if storms persist or rainfall totals rise.
Flood Watch remains in effect through midnight. Stay tuned to local alerts and have an evacuation plan ready if you live in a flood-prone area.
