Petersburg, Virginia – Rising water from overnight storms has submerged roadways and crept into low-lying areas of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, and Dinwiddie County, as a Flood Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Several neighborhoods are already seeing water over streets and streams overflowing, with dangerous driving conditions reported.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, up to 2.5 inches of rain has already fallen across Chesterfield, Prince George, and surrounding communities, triggering flooding in some of the region’s busiest corridors. Authorities warn that additional rainfall—potentially up to 1.5 more inches—could worsen conditions, especially near Virginia State University, Fort Gregg-Adams, Ettrick, Matoaca, and the Petersburg National Battlefield.
First responders have closed sections of several roads, and travel is discouraged, particularly before sunrise. Residents should never attempt to drive through flooded streets; most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles. If you’re in a flood-prone area or near local creeks, be prepared to move to higher ground quickly. Power outages are possible if water continues to rise, so charge devices and gather emergency supplies.
Flooding of rivers, creeks, and storm drains is expected to persist through early morning. More updates or extended advisories may follow if rain intensifies. Stay alert for emergency notifications and expect lingering hazards even after waters begin to recede.
