Richmond, Va. – Localized flash flooding is possible across much of Virginia this afternoon and evening as heavy showers and storms move through central and southeastern parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall in isolated spots—especially across urban areas of the Piedmont, including Richmond, Charlottesville, and Lynchburg. A marginal risk for flash flooding remains in effect through tonight, with lower rainfall amounts expected along the Eastern Shore.
City streets and poorly drained low-lying areas may flood quickly, and forecasters warn that road closures are possible in places like Alexandria, Danville, and Roanoke. Water levels could rise rapidly along creeks and streams, especially where rainfall rates peak during the evening commute.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and monitor local alerts. Emergency officials recommend charging mobile devices, checking drainage around homes, and preparing for potential power outages or travel delays.
Rain and storm activity is expected to taper by early Thursday, but additional watches or advisories could be issued if rainfall intensifies later today.
