Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued an advisory for increased fire danger on Wednesday, October 22, across central and southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina due to continued dry weather and gusty winds.
According to the NWS, relative humidity levels are expected to drop to 25–30%, with westerly winds between 10–15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. These conditions will create an environment where fires can ignite and spread quickly, especially in areas with dry vegetation.
The greatest risk is forecast between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, though forecasters note that Thursday may also bring another round of elevated fire danger if winds remain strong.
Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, use caution with fire pits, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Even small sparks could lead to fast-moving brush fires.
The NWS reminds the public that fall fire season is active through November 30, and dry, breezy setups like this week’s are common triggers for wildfire outbreaks in Virginia and North Carolina.
